The extent of oceaning plastic contamination is rapidly approaching a critical level where there will soon be more plastic in the ocean by mass, than fish. Currently, the vast majority of plastic leaches into the oceans via polluted rivers, and coalesces into vast ‘plastic islands’ deep in the ocean. However, despite being aware of the points of discharge and coalescence, little has been attempted to collect waterborne plastics. This is because the extreme disparity between the minute scales of plastic pollutants, and their colossal areas of contamination, makes it challenging for humans to adequately comprehend, let alone manage. Our thesis situates architecture as a medium through which both scales of plastic pollution can be addressed, as a tool through which plastic pollutants can be consolidated into a manageable and perceptible scale. Focusing on the Pacific garbage patch and the mouth of the LA river as sites of intervention, this thesis speculates upon the development of novel architectural systems for the extraction and long term storage of aquatic plastic pollutants. Once implemented, our sites serve to consolidate plastic sediments from vast geographies of minute fragments, into a dense nucleation of plastic landscapes and architecture. Through its continued growth and mutation, the site becomes a lifeform for the accumulation and eventual digestion of plastic pollutants. The addition of temporary residences to the existing complex thereby presents an opportunity to disassemble this dilemma, proving that the museum can proactively and adroitly engage both environments. Our intervention aims to: Preserve the surrounding ecology by prudently situating the residences within an olive orchard;Project a worthy civic icon, representative of Constantino Nivola’s signature sand-casting technique; Promote cultural heritage by utilizing a design that supports the local masonry economy.&nbsp; Our aesthetic became enamored with rammed earth as the primary mode for achieving conservation ecology, in which our residences are erected using predominantly earth removed by on-site excavation. The residences bridge Nivola’s artistic legacy given the conspicuous assembly and aesthetic similarities of rammed earth to sand-casting; furthermore, the sculpted towering profiles of the residences aptly rise above the surrounding tree canopy formalizing an iconic vista for native Oranians living across the valley, all the while nimbly weaving between the tight arboreal constraints of the grove. The idiosyncratic arrangement and craft of the residences lends individual character to form, fostering opportunities for guests to experience many welcome surprises in their stay at the Nivola Museum. 04:54:18 +0000 banksliudesign.com https://banksliudesign.com/Connective-Courtyard Connective Courtyard 08/ 2016 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; ‘Siheyuan’ is a metaphor of old Chinese society. Historically, it served as the typical housing type for Beijing inhabitants, as varying room orientations reflected the family hierarchy and provided a private courtyard for daily uses. However, due to lack of preservation, the historical districts and “Siheyuan” traditional courtyard housing have become derelict and subsequently demolished. This has led to the recession and deterioration of the once intimate “Hutong” community which is endemic to Siheyuan housing. In order to revive the historical Siheyuan and the Hutong communities, this project studies the formulation of traditional courtyard architecture, and focuses on renovating one of the abandoned Siheyuan in Qianchaoshou neighborhood. By creating an internal street within the site, the proposed concept removes niches that are prone to deterioration, and links the old neighborhood with arts amenities. This project aims to revive not only the traditional structures, but also the long-lost cultural heritage that once exhibited in ‘Hutong’ community. <img width="2197" height="1660" width_o="2197" &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The ocean as a bounded geographic space, has historically been perceived as a natural barrier between territories rather than as a territory in and of itself. Despite oceans covering 70% of the Earth’s surface, they are rarely considered as a valuable, and diverse environment, requiring careful maintenance. Humans have been exploiting ocean environments for hundreds of years. Activities such as transportation and fishing occur primarily near the ocean surface whereas deep sea drilling and exploration happens both below the sea bed and across the entire oceanic depth. However, in depth studies of the ocean remained slim until the 1950s when new interpretive scientific frameworks were developed for data collection. Furthermore, in most scientific fields, more attention has been awarded to territorial topics rather than marine topics also due to the disassociation of the territory from direct human activity. The greatest evidence that humans are invading the marine environment is the giant piles of plastic debris floating on the ocean surface. Many people consider sorting plastic waste into different recycling categories marks the second life of this robust material. However, the majority of them were shipped from developed countries to developing countries for recycling. Due to the mismanagement of waste and low recycling rate, many of plastic debris leaked to the waterbody and ended up being carried by marine gyres and formed into 5 gigantic garbage patches. The greatest patch, Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is estimated to expand over an area of 1.6 million square kilometers(3 times the size of France), with an estimated mass of plastic to be 80,000 tonnes. It is being confirmed that 80 percent of the plastic debris enters the ocean from rivers. This project aims to propose a potential infrastructure that tackles all aquatic plastic pollutants at the rivermouth before they enter the ocean. <img width="2364" height="1681" width_o="2364" &nbsp; Nowadays, the boundary between public and private spaces becomes blurry. For general gathering and socializing purposes, people are not restricted to visit a public park, instead, a mall or a Starbucks is considered by many as alternative destination. Traditional corporate spaces such as shops and headquarters are refurbished and reinvented in their spatial orders and aesthetics to appeal to users. However, in contrast to what it proposes, today’s ‘public’ space suggests a scarcity of freedom. There is an invisible hand dictating the styles and purposes of a space and leave the public unprecedented limitation of true engagement. The voices against corporate control become noticing on the digital forums. The new generation of digital society seeks to attain not only freedom of their personal realms, but also true responsibility over the development of corporatized ‘public’ spaces. There is a necessity to integrating true public interface in the restrictive physical realm. This thesis aims to critique current corporate space; making one that channels publicness in the eye of corporate identity. One that can adapt and alter itself based on user interests, giving the public true responsibility over the evolution of the building. Whether in a company’s headquarters or retail stores, there is typically an integrated space, used to allow public engagement with a corporation. Nowadays, with better interior furnishing and open layout, ‘corporatized public space’ gradually replaces the role of traditional public space. However, due to its merchandising agenda, these spaces are highly manipulative. Corporations and designers dictates the styles and aesthetics of the space and only present to the public what they wish them to perceive about the brand. The ‘so called’ public component is actually limiting the choices of the public and provides them very little control of what happens within. This thesis project starts with an analysis of successful contemporary corporate buildings across different industries. Integrated lighting systems and interstitial air pumps additionally provide luminance and structural integrity. The flexible membranes can be manipulated by pulleys to create a variety of shapes or aggregate together to form bigger spaces. It is a continuous surface, where the vertical developments have yet overtaken its horizontal order. If the existing developments and geographic features can be abstracted as ‘figures’, then the island itself will be a ‘field’. Therefore, the next step is to question that, what is the boundary of the field and how does it connect to the surrounding fields. In fact, there is an ambiguity between Roosevelt Island’s role as an extended field of the city, or as an independent figure isolated by the water. This project aims to find out the role of Roosevelt Island in relation to the rest of New York City. The ‘street corridor’ of Manhattan suggests strongly a rigid urban grid which formulates the rigorous vertical developments. On the other side of the Queens, relatively plain developments transit between the water front and the skyscrapers in near distance. As a medium that integrates the two fields, whether the harbor park can invite the logics of the two into the island. Thus, create localized moments that corresponds with perceived orders from both sides of the island. Figural ConfigurationsIf we think of the figure not as a demarcated object read against a stable field…than it might be possible to imagine figure and field as more closely allied.’ ----Stan Allen, ‘Field Conditions’ In the case of Roosevelt Island, the hills, hospital, the FDR Memorial are all existing figures, whilst the harbor, the elements of the park are new figures that are introduced to the ‘field’. On their own, they are perceived as independent objects with very different purposes.
